Just a heads up, this is not your usual brunch affair. No, This Is Life offers so much more. It is a healthy haven, a wellness emporium and one of the most incredibly inviting cafes I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. This Is Life honestly felt like my “happy place”, I mean I already love brunch and I’m a health nut I’ll admit it; combine the two and there’s not much more I can ask for. My visit started with an Introduction to Nutrition with their in house Nutritionist Katherine Hay… I had been following her on instagram for quite a while so I was stoked that I got to meet her! She was just as I expected, super down to earth, warm, inviting and really knew her stuff. Having completed my Bachelor of Nutrition last year it was great to chat one on one with her about all things health. Katherine specialises in gut health, which is what we spent majority of the consultation talking about, however she also specialises in female reproduction, skin, body weight and so much more. Chatting with co-owner of This Is Life Michaela, it was clear how passionate she was about this dream to move away from the sterile clinic environment of health centres and create a welcoming and nurturing space. Their vision for This Is Life was to:
create a place for you to let go of the rigours of everyday life, reconnect to your health and wellbeing, and blossom into the very best version of yourself.
Stepping out of the consultation, I headed down stairs to the cafe, hungry and excited. I’m a sucker for nourish bowls of any kind, so seeing the Winter Gut Bowl I immediately knew what I was ordering. Oh, did I mention the menu is curated side-by-side with Katherine? Yep, that’s right, every ingredient holds a purpose as to why it’s on there, with little facts about the benefits. I’m in heaven. Tom ordered the Anti-Inflammatory Turmeric Rosti, after I had to convince him to live a little and not order scrambled eggs on toast. Bless.
Neither dishes disappointed. To be honest, they were unbelievable and really shuts down this idea that healthy food doesn’t taste good. I can assure you, my Winter Gut Bowl was full of flavour, it featured miso pumpkin, sauerkraut, black rice, lentil and chickpea hummus, avo, kale and a ginger and sesame dressing that tied everything together. I also added mushrooms because, well, they’re the best. Tom also loved his, which was a huge relief considering i’d pushed him. The rosti smelt incredible, it was hard for me to snap pictured without taking a bite! There was a kale and cashew pesto, broccolini, a poached egg and almond dukka… He also added mushrooms, I’ve got him hooked.
We were craving something sweet after our very savoury dishes, and with the array of raw desserts I thought it’d be rude not too! I chose the lemon meringue tart by Coco and Maple, based purely on aesthetics – look at those little dried edible flowers and the perfect puffs of meringue?! Tom chose the ‘peanut butter and jam’ slice, based on his obsession with peanut butter, it’s real people. The lemon meringue was incredible, it was light, and the perfect balance between tangy and sweet. It didn’t leave you feeling full and heavy like some raw desserts can do. The peanut butter slice was naturally… very peanut buttery. Another tasty dessert, but a little on the dry side for me personally. Overall I enjoyed every minute at This Is Life, I left feeling calm, inspired and full – the perfect combo!
