66A Main Street,
Gembrook, VIC

If you’ve never had the pleasure of visiting the town of Gembrook, you are truly missing out. Home to the infamous Puffing Billy, Gembrook almost has you feeling like you’ve stepped back in time. The town has a unique heritage feel to it, with most of the old buildings still in tact. I had the pleasure of dining at the stylish, yet vintage new kid on the block, Station House Pizzeria. Let me start by saying; if you’re expecting traditional thick, jam packed ‘dominos’ style pizza then you’ll be struck with disappointment. I on the other hand, am extremely picky when it comes to pizza. I love a thin crust, with minimal but complementary flavours that speak for themselves.

The staff were very friendly, and quick to seat us despite being run off their feet on a busy Sunday. We were offered still or sparkling water, which for some reason, I absolutely love. There’s just something about having such a simple option that really sets restaurants and cafes apart fro the rest. We started our feast with Aranchini Balls and the Salumi board. There were 4 aranchini balls and they were beyond delicious. Super crispy on the outside, with a warm and creamy mushroom risotto on the inside, seasoned to perfection! The Salumi board was very generous with a beautiful selection of meats (Prosciutto, Salami and I think Bresaola but don’t quote me on that!), warm bread, pickled vegetables and pesto.

Personally, I could have stopped there. Knowing that I had mains on the way I pulled back and made sure I didn’t fill up too much on the warm bread, as tempting as it was. Speaking of mains. What’d we get? I’m so glad you asked. Well! I couldn’t go past the Pan fried gnocchi with pumpkin, sage, butter sauce and Tom ordered the Spud Firrito pizza. The pizza is named after some hot shot footballer but really all I cared about was the toppings. It featured potato, gorgonzola, pear, walnut and caramelised onion. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t sway him to get that pizza in particular, I definitely planned on stealing a slice or two. The gnocchi was unbelievable, it was rich, indulgent and melted in my mouth. As for the pizza, all I can say is yes. Yes to the thin base. Yes to the simple yet rich flavours. So much yes.

What I love about the Station House Pizzeria’s menu is that it’s created using seasonal and fresh produce, which is all prepared on site so you know you’re getting the best of the best. In hindsight, our eyes were definitely bigger than our bellies but thankfully they let us take the rest of our pizza home in a box… there was no way I was leaving it behind!
