It’s been dubbed the speech of the year… Have you seen it? It gave me shivers and made me feel incredibly proud and excited about the times that we are living in right now. The changes the world is currently undergoing, and how far we have to go. Oprah Winfrey is one of the most influential women to grace our TV’s, constantly encouraging, inspiring and building other women up. There’s no surprises as to why she was awarded the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement at the Golden Globes, but it was her speech that truly brought the world to a standstill.
For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men. But their time is up.
Her speech came off the back of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movement, a movement aimed to create awareness around sexual harassment and sexual assault. Both hashtags spread virally highliting the sheer magnitude of the issue. Attendees of the Golden Globes also jumped on board the #TimesUp movement, with an impressive list of names dressing in all black and donning the times up pin. Some of the big names included Meryl Streep, Emma Stone and Reece Witherspoon. If you haven’t had the chance to watch this incredibly powerful speech, I highly suggest you do. You don’t have to be a feminist, a woman, someone who has suffered abuse to feel the strength of this speech… You simply need to be human.
Speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have.
Thank you Oprah for never giving up and for continuing to push boundaries for us.
Did you see her speech? What did you think of it? I would love to know your thoughts!
