With Mother’s Day fast approaching I picked my brain thinking of Mums that are absolutely killing it in the #inspo category, and uber cool mum Taline Gabriele aka Hippie Lane just about tops the list. Cookbook author, founder of the Hippie Lane app, and most importantly the mum of two gorgeous kids, Taline is the definition of a girl boss who certainly walks her talk. Taline was kind enough to chat all things things food, career and of course mum lifestyle!
CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND WHAT YOU DO?
Taline: I’m an active mum of two who is passionate about good food and health. I’m the type that likes to get through my whole to-do list in a day, and I fully commit myself to whatever project I have going on. I love connecting with my people. I probably do too much and need to find a balance between work and rest. I love fashion and aesthetics and perhaps a little too addicted to travel.
I launched my business, Hippie Lane, in 2010. Hippie Lane evolved from my own battle with food intolerances. I have a recipe app, Hippie Lane, and a cookbook. I also work with brands to spread the wellness message globally.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT BEING A MOTHER?
Taline: Oh so much….The chubby cheeks, their innocent faces, the hugs, watching them sleep, seeing them grow, and rediscovering childhood. Having them love you endlessly, no matter what. And you loving them, unconditionally. Sharing the love with my husband, and witnessing him be an amazing father and knowing that we created this family together.
Being a mum has helped me to become a better person, I now value presence and the importance of appreciating the little things, and all the special moments. It’s helped me to become more selfless and patient, and to truly learn the art of empathy. Motherhood has given me a greater sense of purpose, and has led me to realise that I actually have all that I need – and I’m grateful for it.
HOW DO YOU FIND BALANCE IN YOUR LIFE JUGGLING THE CAREER, KIDS AND YOU TIME?
Taline: I’m not going to deny, it’s difficult. There is lots to juggle. You need to be organised and have a good support network. I’m super grateful for my husband and family who helps with the kids when I’m struggling with deadlines and work responsibilities. In an ideal world, I would work during the school hours, and sometimes it works. When it gets crazy busy, I often find I need extra hours in my day to complete tasks. My to-do list is my best friend – it keeps me calm as I navigate my way through the responsibilities. Most importantly, listing your priorities and working from there is a really efficient way of keeping on track. My children are my priority, and I keep that in mind when I commit to jobs and projects. I’m fortunate that I run my own business and can choose the amount of work I take on at any given time. This is also the key in keeping things do-able.
Self care is what ties it all together. I can’t be any good as a mother and in business if I’m not looking after myself. I make the effort to keep active and to schedule in things for me, like a massage, yoga and just me-time in general. It’s what keeps me grounded and gives me the capacity to function at my best.
HOW IMPORTANT IS IT FOR YOU TO TEACH YOUR CHILDREN ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF EATING WHOLEFOODS?
Taline: Right up there on my priority list. Instead of directing children with rules about what they are supposed to eat and not eat, educating them about the importance of health with trips to the markets and having the children help in the kitchen has been crucial in getting them thinking about healthy food and the value in it. I believe children are a product of their environment. If they see you embracing healthy habits, they’ll follow suite. I’ve never fussed over separate food options for kids and adults. I just fed my children what we ate and they took to it. I try to make it fun for them. When we make smoothies, we talk about fun ‘colours’ for different flavours. I try to make the food look appealing for them by creating patterns with their favourite fruits on the breakfast bowls. I can only hope that the effort I put it now will give them a healthy foundation to grow and develop to their full potential.
